The Cripple Wants Prada July 25, 2006

Watched The Devil Wears Prada last week. A decent movie; with a more focused plot structure than the book and strong performances by… Oh, who the hell am I kidding? I only went to watch the shoes.

Ten weeks ago, I was the goddess of heels. There was no stem too high, no strap too thin, no pattern too gaudy. I wore them all; loved them all. And oh God, I miss them!

I miss wearing two of them at the same time. I miss my sky-high heels; my ankle-strap sandals, my trashy boots, my impossible stilettos, my wedges, my Mary Janes, my leopard print d’Orsays and my silver rhinestone “Carrie Bradshaw had hers stolen on an episode of SATC” Manolo Blahnik knockoffs. I miss being 3-4-5 inches taller and strutting down the street, pretending I’m Gisele and the whole sidewalk is my catwalk, baby. I miss comments from middle-aged ladies at the grocery store asking “How do you walk in those?”, where I’d smile brightly and launch into a three-minute explanation of how to properly distribute your weight over your heel and toe and to make sure that your centre of gravity is over your hips so you don’t fall forward as you step. I miss watching the “this girl is insane” look creep slowly over their faces as they’d try to back away thinking that I was just going to answer their question with something flip like “Practice!”

I started physiotherapy last week, and I’m not afraid to admit that I arrived at my appointment and told my therapist that I’d like to be wearing my very favourite high heels for my office Christmas party in December.  She agreed that it’s a good goal to have, so I’m already feeling better about things.  In the interim, I’m sure she’s more interested in some of the more paltry details like learning to walk again without seeming like an extra in a Romero movie, but as long as we keep the end goal in mind, I’m sure we’ll get along fine.

It seemed to me that every single establishing shot in that film started at the feet and panned upward.

I haven’t read the book, but I found the plot very…anti-climactic. I mean, I know there was motivation and such, but it didn’t go into why Andy changed so quickly and became so sympathetic to her. That being said, Meryl Streep made ME nervous. And the handbags! The handbags!

3. Heather - July 25, 2006

See, this is why we make such good friends, Peg. I love shoes, you love purses. We never compete for the same accessory! And I rather doubt we’d be competing over Adrian Grenier and his wafro. Ick.

4. bridget - July 26, 2006

enjoy the therapy. i have no doubt that with the right excercises, you will totally be able to balance in heels again. I made the mistake of not insisting on therapy and actually *fell* off a 2-inch skinny heel last week in a dress shop. Fortunately for me, I own only chunky-heeled shoes. Tree pose and Eagle pose help with regaining ankle strength and stability, too.

I’ve finally joined 2006 and found a program on the Internets called “an RSS Reader”. Perhaps you’ve heard of such a thing? I guess it collects “headlines” from web logs, or “blogs” as the young kids called them.

I’ll get better at reading these a bit faster. Nodrog, yours too!! MWUAHAHAHAHHAHAA!!

6. CheryL - July 28, 2006

I shattered my foot in a car accident. I have been crippled for 3 monthes now and beginning to wonder if I lost my mind to cabin fever! I am looking like Jack Nicholson in the ‘Shining’ and scare-ing my kids.
I recently couldn’t take it anymore and asked my Dad to drop me off at the movie theatre. I also saw The Devil Wears Prada. I took a walker. Okay…the handicap row is right up against the screen so I had to close the walker up and drag myself the steps grabbing on to the bar. I kept going up, not worrying about getting back down (That’s another story).
The freeking previews had started and people were acting disturbed that a cripple was crawling up the theatre dragging a walker. This cute guy asked me if I needed any help and I just started laughing…I was so mortified. I finally got a good seat and the movie was about to start when I remembered I had left my drink/popcorn at the bottom step. It sucks to be Me…….

7. Nodrog - August 7, 2006

Cheryl! That’s awful! You should have chatted up the cute guy and made a date, not necessarily to hang out with him, but more to have someone to carry the popcorn. 🙂
Libby, I happened to like the wafro. Okay, no I didn’t. But I’d choose him over Preppy McPreperson any day.

I too miss my cute shoes. I returned to work a week after my accident since they had provided a parking spot at work for me. It wasn’t close, but way closer than the lot where I usually park. I’m lucky because just three weeks in I can bear weight on my leg, so I’ve taken to wearing my cute shoes around my apartment.

10. sonia - September 16, 2006

how did you break it then!?!

Being in a cast can really be a pain, often as the cast gets old it gets dirty and unsightly. I was in a cast once and I always wished I could change the color and have it made new again. Often the doctor won’t give you the time of day to make the cast look new again. But I found a site that sells casting tape and I just added a few roll right over the top of my exisisting cast. Now I can change the color to what ever I want. If it gets really dirty I just add a roll of casting tape over top of the old and it looks brand new again.
here is the site if you are interested:

Hi! I don’t know if you still look through this blog…but I just found it online when I googled “can you wear heels after a broken ankle”? I SO understand what you felt here…I was goddess of high heels…until 3 weeks ago when I fell down a flight of stairs (in freaking flip-flops of all things) and broke my right ankle so severely that I’ve now got a hardware store’s worth of metal in there. To top it off, I sprained my left ankle pretty badly, so I don’t even have one good leg for now. I MISS MY HEELS. I walk into my closet every day and see rows and rows of 4 inch heels in all sorts of gorgeous styles and colors and fabrics…and I can’t look away. I miss feeling pretty, attractive…taller (I’m 5’1″ so heels were my staple.) I guess my question is…did you reach your goal? Were you able to wear heels again? And how long after your surgery were you able to? I had surgery the day after my accident (October 13 or 14th I think it was). My goal is to be able to wear heels by next summer. April or May would be great, but I’d settle for (very very carefully) walking into my birthday party in July wearing an amazing pair of heels. Silly, I know, but it’s getting me through. I hope you’re 100%…no, I hope you’re better than that, I hope you’re even better than before the accident, and I hope you’re rocking your heels!
Best~
natalie

Adriana Soto - April 8, 2015

Did you make it? I see that your post is old, so I guess by now you should be wearing your beloved high heels. I’m in the same situation right now, please tell me I’m going to be able to wear my stilettos again. I feel like a bird without wings.

13. LaShondia - December 15, 2008

Natalie,
I feel your pain! Granted I could not wear stilettos like you ladies but I love my wedges and I am terrified of wearing them for new Year’s this year. So terrified that I am actually looking for the best dress flats to wear for New Year’s. I broke my fibula February 25, in a freak accident in my kitchen and had surgery two weeks later to put pins and a bar in. You would think that a year would be enough time but my foot has not felt completely normal in all that time.
Jeez, what is the good of the World Wide Web, if I can’t find answers to my shoe issue, oh yeah, I found you guys…LOL
Happy healing!

14. Kelly - January 12, 2009

so, I had been waiting for 6 months to buy a pair of Mohop sandles (soooo cute) that have four inch heels. I ordered them on a Sunday, broke ankle on Wed. and they arrived on Friday. I keep them in plain sight to keep my focus. I WILL be wearing them by this Spring because they rock. My doctor just laughs and shakes his head at me.

15. Beth McCollum - December 13, 2009

Well I am with you guys on the shoes, I own over 30 pairs of “high” heels and wore them everyday all day until…this past July. I broke my fibula and shattered my ankle wearing/walking in a pair that was only 3 inches. I had to have surgery and have a plate, pins, and screws in my leg. I had to be on crutches for 3 months with no weight on the leg but I am back wearing and dancing in my heels!! just after 4 months.Thank goodness, because I never felt right wearing flats

16. Long legs - July 16, 2011

I am 5 days into a full legger and I dream of my Jimmy Choos

17. Suzane - October 17, 2011

This response is for Jocelyn (Jos). I wanted to thank you SO MUCH for your detailed response to my concerns earlier this month. It was kind of you to share your experience with us, and it has been so helpful. I hope some day I’ll be able to help someone else with mine. I would like to be updated on your progress. I admire your courage and you have given me hope that there is some relief out there for this pain. May God continue to bless you.

18. Margarita - October 21, 2011

I broke my ankle BECAUSE of wearing heels. But it was my own fault for not watching were I stepped. In the emergency room after the xray I was told I needed surgery and the first thing I asked was that if would be able to wear heels again. The doctor wanted to laugh I guess. Now I am 3 weeks post op with an almost bionic foot. I cry each time I see my heels. I asked the same question again, and the doctor said before a year I should be able to wear them. Hope is out there for all broken-ankled high heel lovers!!

19. Char - October 21, 2011

I had to return to the islands after 12yrs of missing my family. My father died and I had tons of planning, catching up with friends and family and one week to do it all. Apart from the sadness of it all, just being back home and see the sand and water….oh my gosh how I missed it all. Sadly to say, on the third day of being there…realising how crazy they drove (and thank god my husband couldn’t make the trip due to work…) that the seatbelt was going to be my bestfriend, a car came out of nowhere and hit the vehicle I was in. After a day in the hospital in a third-world country, I decided that I was definately coming back home to have my “surgeries”…..thus missing my daddy’s funeral and now, not only can I not return to work for three more months…which means, no money coming in on my end….but, all the new boots and stilletoes I just bought and haven’t worn yet, I may never be able to wear, ever again. I am freaking out! I am a clutz with the crutches, the walker, I hate…and I refuse to rent another wheelchair. It would not manuever properly in my house, it was a waste of money. I have broken bones that I cannot even pronounce…tellous, metatellous, who knows….its four broken toes(which they claim have to heal on their own…) etc, pretty much severed the foot bones that connects right at the crease of the ankle ontop, plates and screws and pins and a rod that has to stay in for 6 weeks. I’m no doctor, so thats all the example I can give…it hurts like hell. I refuse to get addicted to these pills, so I only take as needed. Anyway, I am soo ready to return to work and my heels….this whole bed-ridden ordeal is turning into a girl/wife gone mad ordeal….I was feeling down and out and found this site. It’s good to know someone understands. I hope everyone has gotten better and for those of us yet to get better, good luck…Go heels! I can’t wait! And I make no bones about it, I WILL wear my heels again…Thanks for letting me vent.

20. Veronica - December 5, 2011

I Broke my fíbula n tibula in October n needed surgery. I have a plate n screws. I miss my heels so badly. Were you able to wear heels again? Is there hope?

21. Margarita - December 9, 2011

Im two weeks into physiotherapy, post op, and can walk without crutches!! People still laugh about me asking when will I be able to wear high heels, since thats the cause of my broken ankle, but I am still keeping hope alive and will let all know when I start wearing them. One doc told me you have to upgrade real slowly. It all depends on each persons body. I hope someone can post about wearing high heels post broken ankle. Best Wishes!!

22. Theresa - March 26, 2012

Thank goodness for this site. I broke tib/fib two weeks ago when slipping on some ice in a parking lot. First question most people ask is ” was she wearing her silly (stilletto) shoes. And I wasn’t. One person commented I probably would have been more stable in the heels. Now am out of dance competitions for the rest of the season and can’t wear my shoes. I miss my shoes! Also read about swollen ankles. Please tell me it gets better and I can go back to the good shoes after cast comes off. My husband has now packed away my heels saying I.am not going to need then for a while and they are in the way. I want to bring them out again but looking at them is kind of like watching my dance group compete without me. Depressing.

23. Sara - May 17, 2012

I broke my ankle almost 3 years ago, now i have platinum and pins in it… it was completely shattered. i “can” wear heels.. like it doesnt hurt or feel weird.. i used to wear heels all the time. and ALWAYS when going out.. i havent been wearing heels much tho cuz im scared something will happen.. what would u say? is it too risky? or is it as much risk as anyone else? should i wear heels? if so, is there a type of heel ud suggest most? i thought a boot is best.. please let me know .. thank you all!!

24. Trudi - April 15, 2013

Hi! I love my heels too and was so glad to see this blog after googling when can I wear heels after a broken ankle. I broke my ankle in a frak ice skating incident at the end of December and was in a wheel chair for NY Eve/Day festivities. After 6 weeks in a boot, I was limping in real sneakers (not my cute wedge sneakers that sit on the shelf mocking me). It is now April and I still have significant pain when I try to get into my beloved heels – even wedges. I was told that the ligaments are severly damaged and need more time to heal that the break. I was told to wear an ankle brace, take ibuprofen daily, and find every opportunity to put my leg up with ice on it to speed up the process…(RICE). I thought I would pass that info. along to others patiently (or not) waiting to get back into their high heels. I was hoping for April, but since it is already the 15th, I am shooting for June. Good luck to all!

Mari - September 16, 2013

Hi girls!
I fractured my ankle in two places a month ago, August 18th 2013 in an obstacle course in the Dirty Girl Mud Run.=( my first time d7oing it and probably my last.
I had to have surgery and had 7 screws and 1 plate. I was on the splint/cast thing for 2 weeks and now I’m on the aircast not with no weight bearing for 2 weeks. Well I was just thinking if I’d be able to wear high heels ever again and I found this blog=). Thanks! I’m going to my Dr in a couple of days so I’ll ask about my high heels and see what he says. Good luck to everyone out there who has a broken foot. Hope we recover fast and well so we can start weeding our beautiful shoes.

Generally I don’t learn article on blogs, however I would like
to say that this write-up very forced me to
try and do it! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thank you, very nice post.

26. Diana Reyes - August 14, 2015

I broke my ankle about 7 months ago and I’ve been wearing heels for about a good month now . And all of a sudden I can’t put pressure on the ankle and it’s all swollen. 😦 I thought I was back in the game and it turns out I’m not.

27. The Beauty of Life - April 3, 2016

I feel your pain! I just broke my ankle in February and am non weight bearing for about 2 more months. I am DYING to get back into my heels and really hope I will be able to do that before too long. The worst part? I broke it in Uggs!!

28. farhsrealm - September 27, 2017

Hi… it’s been 11 years since you broke your ankle and were a ‘cripple’. I fractured my leg 4weeks ago. I opened my plaster today. It didn’t heal fully yet. I need 3weeks more. I bawling my eyes out, cause i expected to walk properly atleast and walk in heels in a month or two. I googled “can you walk in heels with fractured feet” and this came up.
I have my aunt’s wedding in 3 months… please tell me i can be the goddess of heels i her wedding
😭😭😭😭😭😭

29. Nikki - April 14, 2018

Hi Dear! I know all too well how you feel. On Feb. 3, 2018; I was walking in the kitchen with my “sky highs” on….., and slipped. Upon arriving at the ER the next day, I got the bad news. My right lower fibula was broken! I cried right then and there! Well, anyway, I was released from the boot on April 11, 2018! You absolutely cannot go back to wearing your stacks. You have to let the tendons, ligaments, nerves, bone and muscles COMPLETELY HEAL!!!!! If you don’t, you risk an even worse injury next time. I pray that doesn’t happen though. Allow yourself a full 30 days. As you wait though, you need to check the web for the correct exercises. Bob and Brad are great/excellent pt on the internet. They offer professional sound advice! Don’t rush it! Dobt even chance it! Remember. You’re still beautiful with or without the stilettos! I f I could do it, then so can you! We’re strong, and want to remain that way. Look Kiddo. You’ll b fine, but just do the required/appropriate exercises daily! The fibula only supports 17% of your body weight, so look at it as a means of getting those legs (both) in great shape! Love ❤️ ya! God b with us, and take care. Remember. You’re NOT ALONE! After all, at least we’re in the top few to even step out in those monsters!
